This information is for a trail millage campaign for the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Marquette County, Michigan.
The campaign was run on a shoestring. Money was raised through the Trail Ambassadors who are allowed to advocate on political issues and community members and businesses.
Campaigns steps and cost:
- Got a county list of registered voters – approximately $300
- Millage flyer – $600 printing costs
- Mailing costs – $1,000
Mining Journal advocated on the trail millage’s behalf and provided an editorial. Stories were run in the Marquette Magazine, Marquette Monthly, Outdoor Times, Township Newsletters, and Public Radio.
An email campaign was executed.
Maps were made and posted throughout the area.
Many Powerpoint presentations with pictures, signs, what would be saved, stories, etc. were given to township boards, county clerks, many of the service clubs, County Board, senior centers, as well as a special presentation at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum.
The ambassadors knew how much would raised in each municipality and what the average homeowner would pay in each municipality.
Although the millage failed, it was very close. Two votes in one municipality and 36 in another. Otherwise the trail millage had the popular vote by over 4,500 voters.
